Ecocritical guides: Gallerie dell'Accademia
Monday 13th of April, 6pm

Shaul Bassi, Full Professor of English Literature and Enviromental Humanities at the University of Ca' Foscari in Venice and co-editor of the series Ecocritical Guides and Camilla Pietrabissa an art and architecture historian and book co-editor will present their brand-new volume: Ecocritical Guides: Gallerie dell'Accademia (wetlands 2026), edited by Camilla Pietrabissa and Michele Nicolaci.

The new series of Ecocritical Guides explores key sites of Venetian and Italian culture from an entirely new perspective—one that goes beyond traditional interpretations to focus on cultural, ecological, environmental, and gender-related themes that often remain overlooked in the reading of artworks. Through a walk among paintings and drawings by different artists, this guide combines the historical perspective of art criticism with a forward-looking vision, addressing fundamental ethical questions that revolve around our relationship with the environment. The journey
begins with the artworks and leads to the transformation of the Venetian rural landscape and its lagoon, the fragility of artistic supports in relation to the elements, the figure of Saint Francis as an icon of environmentalism, and the quest for the perfect blue to depict a stormy sea. A fresh perspective on a beloved art museum.
